Thanks for the suggestion. However, it does not seem to make
any difference.

If I do

slrn -h snews://news.forteinc.com

it says it can't resolve the host.  But it will connect if I do it
normally.

It turns out that it's been connecting to 69.16.179.43,
which resolves to forte.iad.easynews.com . So I tried
changing to that.

However, if I try 

slrn -h snews://forte.iad.easynews.com

it starts the connection, but then gives me a bunch of tls 
status messages, and then prompts for a username and
password, the same as when I tried to put snews:// in the
"server" line in .jnewsrc.  If I enter my username and
password I get a bunch more messages, netstat says it's using
nntps, it exchanges a bunch of packets, then says it's checking
news, then craps out without saying why.  This is exactly the same
as what I got before.

So I will repeat the question. Has anyone ever successfully
used slrn with SSL, and if so, how did you do it?

Is there something wrong with version 1.0.1 with S-lang
version 2.2.4?  Does the "External programs" need something
more in addition to "+ssl" ?  Is there any other documentation
I should be looking at?

Or is ssl support just a figment of someone's imagination,
and I'm wasting my time trying to get this to work because
there simply is not any real support for SSL in slrn?
