You might be able to reproduce the problem using telnet:

   $ telnet blocknews-ams.sslusenet.com nntp

   mode reader
   authinfo user YOUR-USERNAME
   authinfo pass YOUR-PASSWORD
   group sci.electronics.design
   head <BAD-MESSAGE-ID>
   body <BAD-MESSAGE-ID>
   article <BAD-MESSAGE-ID>
