the MIME macro that comes with slrn isn't very useful with
real-world messages as e.g. found on gmane.org. I've forked and
improved it some time ago so it handles arbitrarily numbers of and
nested parts of message/rfc822, multipart/alternative,
multipart/mixed, multipart/digest, multipart/related, and
multipart/signed content type, has correct mailcap support and
offers a menu for saving each part. Output is intentionally quite
similar to mutt, I've been using it for ~3 years and it handles
pretty much anything I've encountered on gmane. The only thing it
doesn't do is veryfing signatures or decoding GPG/SMIME because I
have had no need for it.
