I'm not sure what you mean by checking the groups. When I look at all of 
the unsubscribed groups in group mode, I see unread article counts next to 
unsubscribed groups I've never visited. Before my previous post to this 
thread I entered one such group and saw articles (approximately the number 
listed in the count).

Did you try running slrn with --create pointed at a new newsrc file, so 
slrn will download the active file to make an initial newsrc with all of 
your server's groups listed? I believe I did that long ago when I first 
made my newsrc (but it was so long ago it's hard for me to be sure of that) 
and then I also specify using the active file as I previously indicated. 
Perhaps that's worth a try on your end with your server.
