I do enter at the console: telnet localhost 119 
or: telnet 127.0.0.1 119

and the log file will say: "hi, you can post". 
If I now enter into telnet, for example, something 
like "group de.comm.software.newsreader" 
and "xover 200", I will get lots of stuff in the syslog, what is
in the header of that specific posting from somebody. If I type
"article 200", I will see the text.

No firewall, I installed my Linux only recently and I feel I do
not really need any firewall or any sophisticated security, being
online only a few seconds for retrieving news and mail.
