It seems the easy answer (though it's a bit of a kludge) is just to 
invoke snget for a single group on each server. Choose a low-volume
moderated group and the lack of filtering doesn't matter too much.
SNHELLO then recogises that there are posts waiting to go, and sends
them...

....then let the filtered download deal with the rest of the groups.
