The suggested method is a bit dangerous if you shuffle
articles, because newsgroup names are kept in the articles,
and these are not altered.  Minorly, the names are mapped in
the .newsgroup file, but when a new name appears a new entry is
added here.

Alternatively you can make a symlink to the existing newsgroup.
But then it is still accessible under the old name.

I don't have a better answer to your problem.  I didn't think
renaming would be a common operation.
