Spread performance with multiple segments

Hi Guys,

I was wondering, if there are multiple segments of the spread, they  
should be totally independent or connected? And if they should be  
connected how this happens.

And has anyone experienced increase in performance by adding more  
segments?

And finally am I right in that inside a segment, daemons communicate  
by a ring?
