Thanks for the responses. NAT port forwarding wasn't the issue; as indicated I could get a console on each remote system. I spotted the -R parameter and tried that instead. As expected, it didn't work, but when I tried once more using the original command line, everything worked as expected. I didn't change the configuration of the remote system; all I did was connect with a different parameter, then revert back to what I was doing all along. And now it works. Bloody weird, is all I can say.
