Somehow the statement "do you own homework" comes to mind here...

Honestly, if you've got an assignment for this area it might be a 
good idea to do the research yourself.

That said,

RSS can be said to have evolved as a tool to extract abbreviated 
information from websites for the purpose of integrating content into 
portal-style websites.  It's certainly grown beyond that.

RSS has reached it's degree of adoption based on ease of use.  It's 
pretty easy to make a feed and likewise easy to use it.  Other 
formats have other purposes beyond simple content abbreviations.  
Thus their consumption has had a lesser uptake outside their niche 
markets.

It's become clear that users want flexible access to content.  RSS is 
but one of many early steps in delivering that.
