it's a combination of three factors:
- the number of NewsIsFree users subscribed to a source
- the user rating for a source by NewsIsFree users (users can rate
sources between
  1 and 5)
- the number of click through on each item

Soon, we will be taking into account cross linking, counting the
number of times news links are linked to from other items.

Finaly, popularity is scalled for each newsmap so that the most
popular item has a popularity of 80%, unless there was an item with
higher popularity than that already. This was done because most
popular items are from sources in the "Top News" category. Scalling
helps bring out popular items when you are at items which are in other
categories such as science or health.
