Okay, thanks, I see the issue now. I would say it's a browser 
implementation problem, not an RSS specification issue, the URI is 
clearly present at origin.

I use Opera 7.5, which has built-in RSS support, so its own client 
kicks in. There are preferences by MIME type but for RSS it seems 
impossible to override its default association. We may have to wait 
until Microsoft have an RSS client before they make this easy, but 
they too may want to lock-in users -- pure speculation, of course ;-)
