Question about link/uri in RSS 1.0

I'm not sure if this is more a question of what is "correct" or what is
generally accepted...
Does the URI (rdf:about attribute) of an item in RSS 1.0 have to match
it's <link>? It seems to me that they shouldn't need to. In my
particular instance I want to use a more globally accepted URI for the
rdf attribute but have the link point to an alternate location because
there may be a delay in updating the database that underlies the URI.
How do the readers treat this? Does the reader even consider the URI in
marking items as read or storing them or just the link?
