From my perspective the issue is semantics, not syntax.  I believe that 
the model where an item carrries an opaque blob is not effective and will 
lead to a mess.  My preference is to define the semantics of an enclosure 
as an alternate version of the enclosing item.  The HTML link semantics 
suit me fine:

<link rel="alternate" type="audio/mpeg" media="offline" href="..."/>

Where "offline" means "suited for a disconnected device such as a portable 
audio player".
