Once you're writing a client, I'd suggest you to check feeds on most popular
services out there (typepad, blogger, livejournal, spaces.msn.com,
blogs.msdn.com just to name a few) and see which format they produce. Maybe
it's not a scientific way to the solution, but this will allow you to cover
the most frequent cases. 

And, of course, you should prefer <content:encoded> to <description> if
possible.
