Mac OS 9 (and earlier) had a 31 character limit, and is deprecated and  
no longer supported by it's maker.

If we DO choose to add filename limits (which isn't necessarily a bad  
idea, although one I'm lukewarm about), it should be based on  
*current* OS limits (WinXP+, Mac OS X, Linux 2.4+, etc.).
