Frag,

I just started testing 2.8.8 on two updated Windows 10 systems during the past few months. I am completely up-to-date on the Updates pushed by Microsoft, including KB4056892. This is the January update which I believe includes the mitigations for intel speculative execution issues. I just tested tightvnc after receiving your email, and it is still working in my case. However, there are two caveats I should mention:

1.       I am using Windows 10 Pro for both client and server systems, and since you are using it from Linux, I don't know if that could account for the differences;

2. My intel processor is a Haswell (4th-gen) Core i7 desktop model, and it does not appear that intel has produced mitigation for that model. I'm not sure whether that also impacts the MS update's relevance.

I did just read that MS has put out an update available only on their catalog.update.microsoft.com site which is supposed to "undo" the problematic changes due to the earlier patch. The number is KB4073290, so you may want to check it out.

Regards,
Bob Kreycik
