Regarding KB4056892 .. this has not been installed for me ..

Regarding your caveats:

1.  I have been using Windows server <- Linux Client
     since the release of 2.8.8 with no issue at all.
     So I do not believe the problem arises from any
     differences between the tightvnc binaries ..

2.  If meltdown/spectyre patches have not been issued for
     your system then that points me further toward "that"
     patchset being the root cause ..

Regarding KB4073290,
I do not have either an AMD processor nor an unbootable system,
which is fairly easy to deduce from the email thread.

I will not be following that idea .. but thanks for your time.

I will keep my eye on www.tightvnc news for (hopefully) some news.
