IMO simplest and fastest is if you have a way to connect to the VNC
server with anything other than a 6 character password.

TightVNC was supposed to be the first and may be still one of the few
to support authentication by certificate.

Once logged into the VNC Server, you can query for the VNC installed
(do you know how to query installed packages on Ubuntu?)

A quick search suggests that vino is the default VNC server for most
Ubuntu flavors, but several will install something different (eg
kubuntu). The following is from a 2017 Ubuntu wiki article but doesn't
seem to have been updated so may still be authoritative.
