We've had this issue with Tight VNC in the past as well. I could connect to a "remote" machine and the remote screen would be shown as black and nothing I could do would fix it. The display on the "remote" machine showed just fine. IIRC, reconnecting didn't help, booting was required. It didn't happen on all machines all the time; it seems to have been "random" as to what machine it would happen on, and if it happened on that occasion or not. That problem seems to have gone away in the past few releases, thankfully. The only solution that worked for us has been to go to a new Tight VNC release. For a while, we were on tenterhooks every time we connected.
