Some applications not accepting vnc keyboard input.

Not that I wish to play mame over vnc it's just not fast enough but I
wanted to try it out or set keys and stuff but was unable to do so. I kind
of would also want to use another device, IE: laptop to send keys to it.
(Maybe I can use synergy)
Are there a lot of applications that don't work?
My situation is a bit different than most as I have my machine as a VM
under libvirt with pci passthrough. I hookup a few joysticks to it via USB
passthrough and mostly control it with my laptop.
