Black Screen (I've searched the archives, finding no solution)

This seems to be a recurring problem with most VNC products, not just tightvnc. I have searched the archives of vnc-tight-list and found the most recent problem description (https://sourceforge.net/p/vnc-tight/mailman/message/37708499). I used the suggested xstartup file contents, but that did not fix the problem. I am using tightvnc through guacamole fronted by apache (configured as a reverse proxy). All I get is a black screen. I have searched the internet looking for solutions, but nothing suggested has worked.

My main problem is I don’t know how to proceed debugging the problem. I have looked in ~/.xsession-error, as suggested by Benjamin Tam in a web page dedicated to fixing the black screen problem (https://benjamintan.io/blog/2019/09/23/battling-the-dreaded-black-screen-in-vnc/ <https://benjamintan.io/blog/2019/09/23/battling-the-dreaded-black-screen-in-vnc/>) in general (for many vnc products, not just tightvnc). Nothing in that file suggests a problem.

For the record I am running tightvnc, guacamole, and apache2 on Mint Linux 19.2 (equivalent to Ubuntu 18.04). I have a terminal attached to the machine on which the software runs, which acts as the system console.

I would really appreciate some suggestions how to proceed debugging this problem.
