Something you might try.
vncviewer 192.168.24.10 -Desktopsize 0x0

Tired to connect to windows 7 machine that has dual 
monitors and it comes up with 3520x1080 as screen size, 
but wouldn't conenct with those setting, so tried a 
number of options, and got nothing, but then use 0x0 
connected. 

Seems to be the resizing option on new tightvnc server 
that is either returning something tiger vncviewer 
doesn't like. I didn't see anything in my strace output.
