simple regex for highlighting _/* fails

Moin moin,

I use this successfully in mutt and tried the same with tin:

(^|[[:space:]'"(])_[^[:space:]_][^_]*[^[:space:]_]_([[:space:]'").,:!?]|$)

However, this fails in tin, but I don't understand why.

Samples that fail but should work (or at least do with mutt):
_bla_
nutzloser _unbeachteter_ Knueppel ist.
