It's OK, I found it, tin 1.8.3 was using ncurses and my default build
of 1.9.3 used curses.  Adding --with-screen=ncurses sorted out my
colours problem and I'm now using 1.9.3 without problems.

I'd love to know what was crashing version 1.8.3 though.
