One additional bit of information, the output on startup:

  MiLu@Dago: ~ > tin -g news.gmane.org
  Kann keinen (voll qualifizierten) Domainnamen finden!
  Lese Konfigurations-Datei...

Tin warns it cannot find a (fully qualified) domain name.
Despite the domainname setting I put in /etc/tin/tin.defaults .
