thta depends on the server, _if_ your posting contains a Message-ID while
sending to the server thenm tin will add a filter based on the ID to your
filter file and that should catch all followups to your posting in the
thread (no matter if it was the initial posting or not). If your posting
does not contain a Message-ID (which is the normal case when the server does
not pupose on the the client or tin is not build to generate it's own IDs)
add_posted_to_filter will only add a filter rule for threads started by you
(subject based filter).

I'd use 'X' to hide all non hot articles and use the normal navigation (keep
in mind that this will hide _all_ articles with are not hot, no matter if
any other articles in the same thread are hot or not (and '*' or ';' do only
work on unread articles, so you can't use them) and 'X' to toggle back to
normal when I'm done reading the hot articles.
