You're right; this is make output, not configure.

I don't still have the configure output, but I did scan it at the time
and nothing alarming leapt out at me.

Laziness.  I had already downloaded the 1.5.8 version from some other
source and I didn't see the need to labor my poor pokey dial-up
connection with downloading a second version that I didn't know to be
any better than the version I already had.

Yes, README.WIN is included with 1.5.8.  I did read it before starting,
but again, I didn't fully understand what I was reading.

However, I investigated my cygwin setup, and it appears that I have had
ncurses (whatever that is) v5.3-4 installed all along.  So I'm guessing
that lack of ncurses is not the cause of the problem.  Just a guess...
:)

Is there a *simple* way to test whether ncurses is installed and working
*correctly*?
