(no subject)

I have seen a problem lately on our tux web servers.
I am running several different flavors, but for this problem, I tested on  
Shrike

System in question: Red Hat 9  box
dual 1 GHz  processors
Linux version 2.4.20-20.9smp ([email protected]) (gcc 
version 3.2.2 20030222 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.2-5)) #1 SMP Mon Aug 18 11:32:15 
EDT 2003

Problem
We are serving up multiple big files  on an ample dual proc, 2 GB server.
We set max connects to 250 (to limit bandwith usage), and when that limit is 
reached, it allows the current ESTABLISHED connections to complete(albeit 
slowly), but all others go into a CLOSE_WAIT state No other connections are 
allowed and tux stops serving up files, until a tux restart. we set the max 
connects low to keep bandwidth usage to a minimum.
if we  netstat -n | grep 192.168.60.10:80 -c i get  355 CLOSE_WAIT 
connections


tested : 2.4.20-20.9 ([email protected]) (gcc version 3.2 
20020903 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.-5))
tested : 2.4.20-20.9smp ([email protected]) (gcc version 
3.2.2 20030222 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.2-5)) #1 SMP Mon Aug 18 11:32:15 EDT 2003

I further tested this on a single cpu box First running latest RH kernel and 
then I installed 2.4. running the same kernel and set the max connects to 3 
and fired up apache ab against it.

After I get the initial timeout after the limit is reached, I cannot hit a 
website with a browser until I restart tux. I closed all browser windows and 
rebooted the client and tux still doesnt serve up files.

performing a netstat -n, we get 4 established connections ( phantoms I 
assume ) and 20 connections in a close wait state.
essentially it  looks like tux is hung. I can set that max connect number to 
what ever and I get similar results.

strangeness. so it appears that tux doesn't terminate connections properly 
once it hits the ceiling?


there are other versions I have tested against, all with varied, but similar 
results.

any ideas? am I missing something?

BTW we have been running tux for close to 2 years now, and are pretty 
pleased  with it's overall performance, including Debian web servers with 
the RHCA patch re compiled into it.
