RE: Hello All. :-) Usage of UBH 3.x

Yes, the UBH 3 CVS is sure a little sketchy in terms of documentation.  
While I find it faster than 2.5, it seems the functionality is a bit 
reduced.  The main reason I upgraded was I saw in a changelog that using -i 
while retrieving multipart binaries and choosing not to retrieve them caused 
them to be marked as read - something that didn't happen in 2.5.  But, 
instead of finding out I don't have to choose 'no' for the same messages 
each time, I find out that -i has been removed - Murphy's law, I guess ;)

Anyhow, I've pasted Gerard's quickstart guide below, which I estimate to 
have come out sometime around the time stable3 got committed to CVS.  Once 
you've followed those steps (ubhdb, ubhasm, ubhcatalog), you'll have a .log 
file for each newsgroup.  I guess you're supposed to go in and delete all 
the multiparts you don't want, and then run ubh -b /path/to/logfile.log - 
that's at least what I do.  I was having a lot more luck just "sucking" down 
newsgroups entirely, but I can't afford to do that bandwidth-wise anymore.  
It sure would be nice for UBH to be intelligent enough to track the 
filenames I was after, and not make me choose (or exclude) individual parts 
using a flat text file.  Anyhow, enough of that - here's Gerard's Quick 
Start guide for CVS.  Sure would be nice in the CVS tree or on the website.  
Or something.

1. When you grab this tree, the first thing you will want
to do is cd into the doc subdirectory and create the
documentation (via the given 'makedoc' Perl program).

2. Read and understand the README file. Read the other files
(starting with index.html). Read the CHANGES file for the
list of closed New Features and Bugs.

3. cd into the install subdirectory, and edit the 2_servers.sql
and 3_newsgroups.sql files to contain your server(s) and
groups.

4. Run one of the installers, install.sh (Unix) or install.bat
(Windows). This creates the (empty) database.

5. cd back to the top-level ubh directory

6. Run ubhdb

7. Run ubhasm

8. Run ubhcatalog, and look at the resulting .log files

9. Create a ubhrc (possibly including some -I) and run the
ubh client. If you're doing a big download, fire off
multiple copies of the client (REALLY!).

10. Let me know what you think.


I'll do some cleanup based on your feedback and make a general
release.

I've been a *longtime* user of UBH, and love it to death. It's
probably one of the best and most capable programs for Usenet binary
downloads I've ever used, and that's saying something. :)

Anyway, I thought I'd dabble in the new 3.x version, since it looked
interesting. Unfortunately the documentation is a little sparse. I
have the MySQL server going, I have all the dependencies (or so it
seems) but I was wondering if someone could send me a quick little
step-by-step quick-start?

Here's what I've done--tell me what I'm missing.

1. Built a .ubhrc with the variables: NNTPSERVER, NEWSRCNAME, DATADIR,
MULTI_EXT, SINGLE_EXT

2. Built a .newsrc with a single newsgroup followed by a single colon
and a newline.

2.5 Built the SQL tables/etc with the sql from the install directory.
Modified them to match the appropriate newsserver, newsgroup, etc
information, stripped out the default values.

3. Ran "./ubhcatalog" to retrieve the list of headers and it appears
to have pushed them into the MySQL database.

4. Ran ./ubhmark to try to mark them all as UNREAD.

5. Ran ./ubh -A -G news.group.blah

... but when it gets to the part where it says it's about to deal with
the single and multi-parts, it just immediately prints out a little
status line, "0 bytes" etc etc and exits without actually having
downloaded anything from the news server.

What am I missing again?
