Are you still having a problem?  I can't see any reason
why you would be having this problem (and wouldn't also
see the same problem with 2.x or telnet).

If there is anyone else seeing this problem, please speak up.

I've done exhaustive testing of 3.x on both giganews and my
local roadrunner news server, and I've never seen this kind
of behavior.
