ubh, at least the old version, if it could'nt complete a disk write when writing the temp file, due to lack of disk space, it would delete the temp file after attempting the decode and then having space again continue on to the next article.  this would cause many articles to be marked as read when in fact none of those articles had made it successfully to the disk.  

I recommend a simple fix of a die statement at the end of print to file statements like one does in an open file statement.  I have tested this and it works. 

for example:  print PARTSFILE @{$p};
becomes:	print PARTSFILE @{$p} or die "cannot print: $!";
