I'm successfully using perl 5.8.0, though I'm running ubh 2.6b1, and I
use uudeview as an external decoder (it's faster than the perl decoder,
and it avoided some memory-bloat problems that existed in perl 5.6's
self-tied array handling back when I was using the older perl).

If you are still using 2.5, you might try grabbing the last ubh 2.x from
CVS by using the download link at this URL:

    http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/ubh/stable/ubh

There are a good number of fixed bugs in this version, and you might
find that one of them helps you out.
