Hi,

Firstly I am completely new to ubh, have limited perl/mysql
experience - and I have some obvious questions:

Ive downloaded and installed UBH 3 stable - and installed all the
perl modules, all went without a hitch.

I've read through the ubh message board to pick up on any special
things I need to do given this is a CVS version. Found nothing that
should affect my 'normal' usage.

I then found the 'quick start guide' - cheers for that as nowhere
else do you provide any high level user guide documentation...

I generated the documentation, all pretty basic stuff. Just a note to
those not familiar with makedoc (set it to executable CHMOD 744
makedoc) and ./makedoc - you should then see some humanreadable HTML
files). If your anal like me - remove all the files other than
HTML/README.

Went through the README - all sorted (installed correctly)

Set my MySQL entries up (Server, and newsgroups) set active field to
T. I use WEBMIN so I have a nice simple web interface for the SERVER
and NEWSGROUP tables, Im sure others might find this useful. PhPadmin
will also make your life easier...

Next I needed to CHMOD 755 all the ubh*** perl files. And (because I
run more than one version of perl) edited the 'Prel' reference in the
top of the perl files to point to my desired version of perl - as all
the modules I had to install were installed for that particular
version of perl)

I ran ubhdb (./ubhdb -g alt.binaries.cd.image) and sat back and
waited for the significant number of header files to populate the
database (a little hint for other newbies here - only put a small
newgroup in first to get your head around ubh, I use giganews and
slapped in alt.binaries.cd.image and had half a million headers to
plow through!!) 2 cups of tea and a hot cross bun later...

ok then I ran ./ubhasm - seems to process all the stuff I just
downloaded. no errors.

next I ran ./ubhcatalog, and looked at the resulting .log files

OK this is where my questions come in - I hope someone can assist
me...

The quick start guide points me to a /root/.ubhrc file - Im new to
ubh and no documentation suggests what should be in here for version
3. No suggested configuration file is offered in the CVS tree. Im
completely stumped as to what I need to put in here - can anyone
offer me a sample config or simple state a place I can read up on it?
Thanks.

And bizzarly once I have that bit sorted I dont actually know how to
process all this local MySQL data to get the binaries Im interested
in, i.e. the use of the main ubh perl file. I've read the ubh
documentation and it suggests my .ubhrc file will be involved in this
to this - why Ive got a database full of configuration information!?.
Im assuming that now I have a database full of interesting headers I
will be using ubh to run searches on this data for binaries I want,
it will then manage the physical fetching of the files and local
assembly/decoding?

I guess Im looking for an example run through of the steps needed to
get a binary once Im past ubhcatalog. Any shell scripts people may
have knocked up would be greatfully appreciated as ultimately this
whole thing needs to run as a cron job.

Oh and the quick start guide (posted here) asked me to 'Let me know
what you think' I think that this could be a powerful tool, hence my
interest. It just needs someone to spend some time on a HOW-TO. Id be
happy to offer my time on this, as soon as I get my own setup running
smoothly.

Kind regards

Andy
