Thanks! ... I didn't realize that the 'unison' command might start with a graphical UI by default for some binaries. I was using it in text mode too - the xvkbd was just to get the keystrokes into xterm, like a hacked 'expect'. I tried "echo ... | unison" but it doesn't like that.
