best way to rename a big amount of file

Hello,

I use unison to sync ~2 TB of data with a remote server. Now I have to 
rename a big amount of the files with an script. Because of the amount I 
would like to prevent the deleting and re-transfer of the files when I 
run unison after.

Is it possible to rename the files local and remote and then sync with 
unison?
