It's just that the unison package in Ubuntu is ancient. This
inter-version incompatibility was corrected in version 2.52.0,
released 2 years ago. While compatibility with 2.51 series (and even
2.48 series) is still carried around for now (with the caveat of
building with somewhat matching compiler versions), it will not be in
the future. Everyone should upgrade to the latest version or to at
least 2.52.0.
