I can see that, but there is burden forever, if there is a standard
place in the XDG world.  Could be semi-resolved by reading from
~/.unison and if not found the standard place and if not found, writing
to the standard place.  With configured-place only if configured.

I'll see if there is a feature ticket and if not make one.

I don't really want to have it configurable until we have a default
config read by all profiles, though.
