I can certainly believe that.  It's really how they fit in the larger
ecosystem of commands that can be used in pipes.  For example awk, grep.

I think it is using the normal way, but an alternative view is that
unison's interactive output is like a text editor.  If someone wants to
dig in and bring up a possible change on unison-hackers, it would be
interesting to see what everyone thinks.  Still, there is going to to be
effort imposed on many by a change.  And, without someone willing to do
the work to make the changes, nothing is going to happen anyway.
