can't get rhn_register (and therefore clients) working

I recently setup current on a development machine at work and got it running after a few minor problems (all to do with RHNS-CA-CERT).  I setup a few up2date clients to use my server and everything worked and continues to work no problem.

I figured it was time to slowly roll this out into production, and spent the better half of yesterday trying to get it to work.  I installed current exactly the way that I did on my development machine, built a brand new redhat 7.2 machine, configured it to use my new current server, attempted to run rhn_register and ran into problems.

I get the following error 5 times and see 0 activity in the current logfile.

A socket error occured: SSL_connect error, attempt #1-5

I have attempted everything from matching permissions exactly with my working current server, generating a new certificate, completely re-installing current from scratch.  I have created the following in hopes that someone can help me figure this one out.
