Paul, thanks for your help.
I still think it is a borked RPM - and some Google searching is
confirming this. Several mailing list queries about this same problem.
Guess I maybe should stop bothering this list.

This also doesn't look right:

pilot-link-0.9.5-ximian.2

bash-2.05#   rpm -q  --whatprovides  libpisock.so.4
pilot-link-0.9.5-ximian.2




I cured the problem - well not really - by forcibly removing the
 pilot-link-0.9.5-ximian.2  and replacing with the Redhat 
pilot-link-0.9.5-8.i386 rpm.
