I guess that's up to one's opinion but I've found yum to be quite stable 
and work /very/ well.  In fact, I will most likely be switching the 
Linux infrastructure here at NC State University to using yum.  
Currently, we're using yup and its on its last legs.

And RHN/up2date isn't?  It changes pretty often.

Again this is one's own opinion type thing but the coders at Red Hat are
no better or worse than the coders that don't work for Red Hat.  I've
worked through all of yum's code, I know what it does, and I know who
develops it.  I honestly think that, in your case, yum will work a lot
better in your setup with less work from you.  Also, yum knows how to
deal with all/most of the RPM corner cases and oddities where your
solution will break.

I know the pain of manually updating Red Hat Linux trees because I do it
for NC State.  Our distro is mostly Red Hat Linux but with enough
differences that all the package have to be checked and tested to make
sure they don't break anything in our environment.  I've written tools
to help.

There's not much there but it helps me a lot.  Sometime soon I'm
planning on writing some docs to go with it.

In your case it seems that your doing just stock Red Hat Linux.  Find a
RH mirror you can rsync the updates off of.  Then set up a cron job to
rsync the updates and run yum-arch.  From then on it should really Just
Work(tm).
