erm. This is very odd.

This does *not* work on my desktop machine (RH 7.2, KDE 3) which is also
the current server.

It works fine on every single other machine I have access to.

I thought KDE/X might have got confused, so restarted all that. Still get 
the same
issue. I cannont work this out.
# ls -1 > fred
works fine. Just not up2date. Adding -nox makes no difference either.

I think I must be going mad....

Still, one positive comment:

egrep '^php' is better match to apt-get 'php*' than grep php since the 
apt-get will
anchor the match at the beginning. Which you want depends of course.
