Subchannels are not yet enabled; that's an error in the documentation.

However, we are fairly close to tackling that beast, as the proper
support of subchannels has become a priority for Hunter as well.  I'd
have to look around a bit for the locations we need to change things to
support subchannels, so I can't point you anywhere, but I can suggest
you pull the current-1.5 repository from
bk://stenia.biology.duke.edu/current-1.5 if you want to start poking
around.  I've made some fairly significant changes to it that haven't
gone through Hunter's review yet, but it's a good start nontheless.
