Re: OT: RH end-of-life

The 1 year end of life for the errata is not as bad as it sounds.  Red Hat
coordinates their errata.
When they release an errata, they release it for all of the currently
supported releases.  That
means that if you started with a RH 7.0 machine and regularly patched it as
7.1, 7.2, 7.3 were
released that you end up with a machine that started as a 7.0 system but is
now running all the
same package version as a 7.3 system, i.e your 7.0 system is effectively a
7.3 system.  With
the new 1 year end of life for the errata, if you do the same starting with
an 8.0 system, you will
be able to keep your system current by regular patching.  By the time the
8.0 errrata are no longer
produced, your system will effectively be an 8.2 system anyway.

There are some gotchas in this though.  For example, the
/etc/redhat-release file will still contain
what you started with so the system will think of itself as an 8.0 system.

Ok, a little off-topic, so list-admins feel free to kill the thread, but...

RH annonced new dates for end-of-life on their products last month
with little fuss. Suddenly it's on The Reg and /. and getting lots of
publicity.

I'd pretty much pursading people here to start looking at moving
our supported desktops in student classroms from Win2k to RedHat.

Now with there published 1 year lifetime, it's not looking at all
practical.
What do those of you that run desktop systems think?
