Just a general request...

Would it be better to have a database abraction layer so that the user can 
choose the backend system...

ie:   Let the user make the choice of Oracle, Ingres, Informix, Sybase, 
PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.

In theory this means some 'glue' for specific databases needs to be written, 
but ensures the 'core' remains the same.   

It also ensures that an administrator doesn't have to justify 'another' 
database, esp. when most orgs have already chosen a preferred database solution.
