Yes, the video driver is essential, especially if the PC you are controlling has a lot of screen activity, like say, meters going up & down.
On a LAN, without the driver, I don't get any meter movement. On the same LAN, or over a wireless connection, meters are very fluid! That's the very reason why I picked the Ultr@vnc server over any other server. It also beat's TightVNC's video driver hands down, with a much lower bandwidth usage in the same heavy graphic-use conditions, with a ratio 5 or so.

That being said...

I have had times when the server got "stuck", after a wireless connection broke. I can't connect to the server anymore, though I have reconnected at the TCP/IP level. So I try to quit & restart the server, but in the case I am talking about, this doesn't work. Then I try to kill the server using the TaskManager. Doing so, and only doing so, I often got good old blue screens. This is not a corner case: I had it happen to me without looking to reproduce it at least 5 times...

Does anyone have an idea as of why killing the VNC Server with the TaskManager could ever cause a blue screen?...

Yes, UltraVNC Fullscreen polling works fine and quite fast without the Video driver... but at the expense of more CPU load.
By using the video driver, you get even faster and accurate screen changes detection and for about 7 times less CPU load.
And if the server is less loaded, it processes screen updates more smoothly, which can help a lot, especially over slow connections when the CPU is already busy compressing the data to be sent...
