On the thread on the message board, I recently suggested some specific 
changes to the plugin API (making it easy for plugins to be reentrant, 
and requiring as a matter of policy that they do so) to attempt to work 
around the issue that resulted in this hack being put in place.

I think it's a discussion you should probably be involved in.
