I remember having this problem on a UNIX/Linux system, but I don't 
remember how I fixed it.  I think maybe I had to kill the session and 
start over.

This reminds me of a problem I was having with a conflict of SSH port 
forwarding:

I think maybe that was a cause of the weirdness we are now discussing.  I 
know it was happening for someone using :12, and thus 6012.
