Bridge mode is available in Apples's configuration tool as well. What you really need is for one of the base-stations to become a client (and not a base-station), which requires the Karlnet firmware. If they could be coaxed into ad-hoc mode then you could do without the Karlnet firmware and having to setup a dedicated link, but nobody supports ad-hoc mode in base stations... The reality is you're going to want different hardware to make a point to point link, AirPorts are great base-station but they're not meant for this job.
